IKW – German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association

The safety assessment of cosmetic products is of major importance for responsible manufacturers all over the world. The principle of safety assessment was anchored in the European cosmetics legislation many years ago. In the meantime the requirements concerning the safety assessment have been specified in more detail and concretized in Annex I of the EC Cosmetics Regulation. Article 10 of the Regulation further stipulates that the safety assessment has to be carried out by a person in possession of a diploma in pharmacy, toxicology, medicine, or a similar discipline.

Such an education is, however, as a rule not sufficient. For the competent assessment of the safety of cosmetic products interdisciplinary knowledge is required, in particular in the fields of chemistry, toxicology, dermatology, manufacturing processes and cosmetics law so that the corresponding person must engage in specific continuing education in these fields. DGK developed, together with IKW and university experts, continuing education courses for safety assessors for the first time in 1998. The lecturers for these courses are highly qualified experts from the respective disciplines from universities, public authorities and industry, including, for instance, several members of the Cosmetics Commission of the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR).

Since 2013 these courses are offered also in English language. Details can be found at www.safetyassessor.info

To give safety assessors a possibility for exchange and to do practical training, in addition a one-day seminar for safety assessors is offered by DGK and IKW. In the morning session the participants get presentations on the most recent or particular developments in the field of safety assessment. In the afternoon the participants will discuss three practical exercises on the evaluation of cosmetic formulas in small working groups. The exercises are provided to the participants about two weeks before the seminar in order to give them the opportunity to prepare for the discussions with their colleagues at the meeting.

After a forst succesful seminar on 4rd and 4th of December 2014, the seminar will be offered now again in Istanbul in English language (and Turkish with simultaneous translation), in combination with the HPCI MEE Congress in Istanbul on 6th and 7th of November 2018.
